I had already left for good right before I discovered this site. I left mentally a few years before that. Coming here simply confirmed what I already knew.

I prefer the straightforward approach:
"I'm overweight, prematurely balding, and still live with my parents. But if you want to marry in the truth, I'm your last chance, as you're already in your early 20's, and I'm the only available JW male in the circuit."

Sherlock Holmes predicted WWII - I saw it in a film
by kepler init was either "hound of the baskervilles" or "adventures of sherlock holmes" where sherlock himself, played by basil rathbone, after wrapping up the case with dr. watson and friends turned to the audience in the theater and urged them to fight on against the threat that menaced europe, the empire and the blessed isles alluding to hitler and mussolini.. since sherlock holmes lived in victorian times this must have been a revelation from god.. no doubt about it.
there is no other way that this could have happened.
and sherlock holmes wrote the story himself.. we studied sherlock holmes short stories attributed to arthur conan doyle in english class.

Are you sure it wasn't Basil, the mouse that lived in a hole in Sherlock's wall?

Do You Honestly Believe That You Would Have Officially Left The JW Religion If They Didn't Shun You?
by minimus ini left as an inactive person.
i pretty much have been left alone by the elders and witnesses, as far as being hounded.. i know of many that either disassociated or got disfellowshipped.. i'm wondering if you think you would have remained a jw, in name only, if the religion (cult) didn't shun and penalize as they do..

I left because I realized it wasn't the 'truth'. That was all it came down to for me. Whether or not I would be shunned as a result was of secondary importance. It was something I had to do for my own mental health.

Special Assembly Day - tepid applause
by sir82 injust got back from a recent sad.. after most talks, the applause was, at most, tepid.. it was striking in its tepidity, if that is possible (and if that is a word).. affter most talks, applause lasted literally no more than 5 seconds.
its volume was scarcely above a whisper.. it wasn't acoustics - the bethel speaker was technically a polished speaker (although presenting the same old boring info), and his talks generated noticeably louder applause.
but even still - that applause was maybe 10 seconds, and about normal-conversation level.. but local speakers - the applause was not much more loud than the hum coming from your refrigerator.. there were 1300+ people there.. it was just so weird - my previous large-group experience was at the agm, where people were nearly apoplectic & drooling with delight over their new "silver bibles" (which very few have read, i'd wager).. these guys were just "zombified".. speaking of bibles - bethel dude called it a "platinum bible".

I remember that the last talk of every assembly was always given by a total applause whore, who would say something 'profound' every couple of minutes, and then pause long enough for people in the audience to realize that they were supposed to applaud. That's why the last talk always went over time at least 15 minutes.

"Worldly" Friends vs "True" Friends
by DuvanMuvan inhey guys i am new to the whole forum thing (long time reader, first time postererer) and i wanted to get some other opinions on something that has bothered me ever since i first became a jehovah's witness.. i was always taught at the kingdom hall that friends inside the orginisation were the only ones i could count on and that the ones out of it (mainly at school) were just being controlled by satan to trick me into leaving the religion.. however, i always found it to be the opposite.
my "worldly"friends were all accepting of my religion (back when i was ok with being a jw) and are the only ones i have really opened up to about wanting to leave.
the only things i have in common with the other teenagers in my hall (3 boys, 3 girls) are that we've all been raised in the truth and... well that's it.. i was just wondering if anyone else found the same thing when they were a teenaged jw or if anyone still in my age finds the same thing..

Welcome, DuvanMuvan!
Two things I've learned since leaving is how wrong my perceptions of "worldly" people had been, and how conditional the friendships I had in "the truth" were.

Bizarre comment about jw.org at SAD
by sir82 inrecently attended a sad.. bethel speaker was gushing about the wt's embrace of new technology, in the part of his talk warning about "apostate" web sites.. a loose summary of his comments:.
"and the brothers at headquarters have made it very safe for you to go to our website.
in fact, the brothers talked to the folks at google, and they made a special arrangement so that when you type in 'j w period' into the google search engine, it automatically shows you the jw.org website.

Isn't that a loving provision for our safety?
Not to mention for the countless JWs who are completely deficient in computer literacy.

ALL JW's to be at the meeting this week...
by Newly Enlightened in.
we asked this person if it could be aqbout the terminology change and they said that was already read last week...... we remember the last time they did this.
got everyone all excited thinking the big "a" was coming and all it was about, was the literature would now be donated instead of charging for it.. .

Jehovah's Witnesses Say They Are The Most Educated In The World. How Would You Prove Otherwise?
by minimus inthey claim their schools, literature and teaching are far more superior than any "worldly" education.
how would you counter that belief?.
-
keyser soze
To a JW, being educated means having the best understanding of the bible as interpreted by the WTBTS. It's the only thing that's meaningful and worthwhile to them. So they are the best educated only if they are allowed to set the standard for "education" for everyone.

What's the difference between Pentecostal snake handlers and JWs?
by undercover innot much.. http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/16/us/snake-salvation-pastor-bite/.
snake handlers can point to one scripture that supports their practice.
snake handling preacher gets bit and then dies because he refused medical help.

For one thing, handling your snake is frowned upon if you're a JW.
